What People Say
From families who have found their footing here
Chan Lai Yee
Daughter of resident, Causeway Bay
"My mother moved to Wah Yin eight months ago and the change has been quite something. She was resistant at first — most people are, I think. But within two weeks she was telling me about the Thursday tea circle and asking me to bring her good brushes for the calligraphy sessions. She sounds rested when I call."

Wong Kin Ming
Son of resident, Kowloon Tong
"The thing that struck me on my first visit was how calm the place felt. No sense of being rushed in or out. The staff member who showed us around remembered which room my father had glanced at twice. That kind of attention — it is not common."

Lam Hoi Yung
Resident, formerly Wan Chai
"I have been here for just over a year. I take the Companion Circles on Tuesdays and Fridays and occasionally sit in on the opera afternoons — though I prefer to read during those. Nobody has ever asked me why. The meals are good. The room is mine."

Tang Chi Wai
Son of resident, Happy Valley
"Pricing was straightforward — one amount, clear list of what it covers. After dealing with another facility where the invoice always had something unexpected on it, this mattered a lot to our family."

Yuen Siu Fan
Resident, Companion Circles member
"I only joined Companion Circles initially — I live nearby and was not ready for more. But the Tuesday group became something I look forward to every week. I have made two friends here who I now see outside the sessions as well. That is more than I expected."

Ho Fong Yee
Daughter of resident, Admiralty
"The staff know my mother's preferred tea and how she likes her congee. These are small things on paper. In practice they mean she feels at home, which is the only thing we were actually asking for."

How three journeys unfolded
Mrs. Fung, 78 — Companion Circles to full Residence Plan
The Situation
Mrs. Fung's children were concerned about their mother living alone in her North Point flat after a short period of poor health. She was well, but isolated — her closest friend had moved to Shenzhen the previous year and her days had grown very quiet.
What Changed
She began with Companion Circles twice a week. After three months she enrolled in the Cultural Studio for the calligraphy sessions. Six months in, she decided to take up a room at Wah Yin — a decision her family say she made entirely herself, without any prompting.
After 14 Months
Mrs. Fung has become a regular host at the Tuesday tea circle. Her son visits every Saturday and says she is more settled than she has been in years. Her calligraphy work now hangs in the corridor near the garden terrace.
"I did not know I was lonely until I stopped being lonely."
Mr. Lau, 83 — Residence Plan from the start
The Situation
Mr. Lau was moving out of the family home after his wife passed away. He had no interest in a clinical environment and was not interested in being managed. His daughter, who had visited three other residences, brought him to see Wah Yin expecting resistance.
What Happened
He walked through the garden, sat down for twenty minutes and said he would take the room. He joined the mahjong group within his first week. Staff noted he was particular about his tea and accommodated him without comment.
Two Years On
Mr. Lau has been a resident for two years and has not looked elsewhere. His daughter visits twice a week and says the move was one of the better decisions the family has made. He attends the opera afternoons and has opinions about which recordings are worth hearing.
"The garden was the thing. I needed somewhere to sit outside."
